Movies And TV Shows I’ve Watched In May (Reviews)

It’s time to share my monthly movie and show reviews for the month of May. Here are the shows that I will be reviewing this month: Hemlock Grove, The Irregulars, Shadow and Bone, Who Killed Sara? (Season 2), and Wu Assassins. And here are the movies I will be reviewing this month: Without Remorse, Synchronic, Spiral: From The Book Of The Saw, The Woman In The Window, Army Of The Dead, Stowaway, A Quiet Place: Part II, I’m Just F*cking With You, and Cruella. Keep on reading to check out May’s monthly reviews.

TV Shows

Hemlock Grove – Seasons 1-3 (2013) – Rating: 3.5/5

The cast of Hemlock Grove was good and the characters were interesting. Bill Skarsgard did a good job playing Roman Godfrey. I wasn’t a fan of Olivia Godfrey played by Famke Janssen, she’s something else. Shelley was one of my favorite characters. The show isn’t boring and keeps you engaged. There’s horror, thriller, and supernatural elements to the show, which I enjoyed. Some of those dealing with werewolves and upirs aka vampires. I really liked Seasons 1 and 2, but thought Season 3 was a bit underwhelming and not as exciting as the previous two seasons. I thought the show’s ending/finale was okay. Hemlock Grove is mysterious, and entertaining. If you’re into the supernatural and horror, I would say give it a watch.

The Irregulars – Season 1 (2021) – Rating: 4/5

I enjoyed watching The Irregulars, and I was shocked to find out that the show was canceled after one season. The cast does a fine job, especially the young actors who all gave great performances. I really liked the different cases that the teenagers were assisting Watson on, which were interesting. The Irregulars is a fun mix of supernatural, horror and mystery. I also enjoyed how the teens were curious about Sherlock Holmes just as much as us/the audience was. There’s some things that happen that I didn’t expect to happen, but with this show, it’s a good thing. I enjoyed watching this series. It’s fun, mysterious, exciting, and it’s refreshing. If this sounds like your kind of show, I would say give it a watch.

Shadow and Bone – Season 1 (2021) – Rating: 4/5

Just like other shows I’ve watched you know I binged this series. I know nothing about the books, but I really enjoyed watching Shadow and Bone. The characters were portrayed fantastically by the actors, the casting is wonderful. Just like other viewers of the show, I have some character favorites lol. The plot kept me engaged and it was intriguing. The costumes were beautiful and the visual effects were amazing. I’m looking forward to season 2 and diving more into the Grishaverse. Shadow and Bone is entertaining, well crafted, thrilling and fun, whether you are into fantasy or not, it is a series worth checking out.

Who Killed Sara? – Season 2 (2021) – Rating: 5/5

Okay so season 2 digs us deeper into the rabbit hole with a closer look into Sara’s life. Continuing from season 1, Alex is still searching for the person who killed his sister, Sara. Watching the show you think it’s obvious or know who killed Sara, but then you change your mind because there’s still a few possible suspects. The cast still gave good performances just like the previous season. Now I thought season 1 had some twists, but season 2 was something else with the twists and turns. The ending has it set up for us to expect a season 3 because the person who’s revealed to have killed Sara was not the actual killer, so it seems. Who Killed Sara? is addicting, suspenseful and thrilling.

Streaming On: Netflix

Wu Assassins – Season 1 (2019) – Rating: 4/5

I really enjoyed watching Wu Assassins. I loved that the episodes were fast paced. The actors gave good performances and they also had great chemistry. I thought the plot of the show was interesting and entertaining. A young chef becomes the Wu Assassin to stop criminals with supernatural powers who threatens to destroy the world. I loved the fight scenes and fight choreography, they always kept me in awe. The martial arts in this show is amazing to watch. I also enjoyed the music played throughout the series. Wu Assassins is exciting, action-packed, stylish, and is a series I recommend watching.

Streaming On: Netflix

Without Remorse (2021) – Rating: 3/5

At first the movie was a little slow, and then it gained traction and moved at a good pace. I haven’t read Tom Clancy’s book so I can’t really compare the two, but I thought this movie was good. The cast gave decent performances and I thought this role was a good fit for Michael B. Jordan. As you are watching the movie there are a few characters that are suspicious. Without Remorse has one or two twist here and there, which may or may not surprise you. This movie is thrilling, has decent action sequences, and makes for a good Friday night flick to watch.

Streaming On: Prime Video

Synchronic (2020) – Rating: 2.5/5

I thought this movie was pretty good. I found the synthetic drug that transports you through time interesting but thought the “time travel” abilities or details could’ve been better. The chemistry between Anthony Mackie and Jamie Dornan was good and I thought Anthony Mackie gave a great performance. I enjoyed the cinematography and music which I thought created an atmospheric tone for the movie. I’m not a fan of the ending, which I think could’ve ended differently; this movie also didn’t excite me or keep me interested as much as I would’ve hoped. Synchronic is unique, thought provoking, and if you’re into sci-fi and thrillers this might be something you’ll like.

Streaming On: Netflix

Spiral: From The Book Of Saw (2021) – Rating: 4/5

I’m a huge fan of the Saw movies so I was excited to hear that a new film from the franchise would be released. The cast does a good job, and I thought overall Chris Rock was a great lead and thought he and Max Minghella had good onscreen chemistry. Casting Samuel Jackson and Marisol Nichols was a good choice as well. I thought it was interesting that the killer targeted corrupt/dirty cops being that in today’s society it’s an ongoing issue. Spiral moves in a new direction with its drama like plot, along with its unique and gruesome traps. Plus the twist/reveal of the Jigsaw copycat killer at the end I did not expect, but I did have suspicions about another character. Hearing the iconic score, “Hello Zepp” at the end during the flashback montage made me so happy because that song is iconic to the Saw films and is always used to reveal the twists in the films. Spiral is suspenseful, unique, exciting, fresh, and a must see for Saw fans.

The Woman In The Window (2021) – Rating: 3.5/5

I didn’t read the book before watching the film, but now I want to check out the book lol. The cast did a good job and Amy Adams (Anna Fox) gave a great performance. Also when it comes to psychological thrillers with women leading the movie, I kind of worry about how the movie’s plot is set out to make the woman feel/seem crazy but I’ll let you guess how it goes. At times my heart was racing for Anna and just like her I want to know what happened to her “neighbor”. Now of course there’s some Hitchcock/Rear Window inspo in the film but I didn’t see the two as the same. Also the twists in the movie I didn’t see coming and I enjoyed them. The Woman In The Window has suspense, thrills, and I say check it out.

Streaming On: Netflix

Army Of The Dead (2021) – Rating: 4/5

I really enjoyed watching Army Of The Dead. The cast is diverse, refreshing and I thought they were great portraying their characters. Dave Bautista did a fine job leading the cast. I really loved Dieter (Matthias Schweighöfer) and Vanderohe (Omari Hardwick) together, those two had me laughing and they both had great chemistry. Zack Snyder did an incredible job with the visuals, and the cinematography. The zombies makeup and special effects looked amazing and that zombie tiger was awesome. I also found the plot to be entertaining and thought it was interesting having different types of zombies. Army Of The Dead is an action-packed zombie film. It’s fun, gory, exciting, and funny.

Streaming On: Netflix

Stowaway (2021) – Rating: 3/5

This movie is a bit of a slow burn. For me Stowaway didn’t pick up its pace until about 49 minutes into the film. The cast gave good, solid performances. One might consider this a survival movie, seeing that there’s an unplanned and additional person onboard, while the spaceship is only equipped for three people. Which leads to the suspense. This is when the big decision on survival and sacrifice come into play. No this isn’t a sci-fi blockbuster, but if you like watching space movies then this film might be for you, otherwise others might not like it.

Streaming On: Netflix

A Quiet Place: Part II (2021) – Rating: 5/5

A Quiet Place: Part II is an amazing sequel to the first film, to me it’s one of the best horror movie sequels I’ve seen. The cast does an amazing job and the acting is superb. I was hooked and engaged the entire time watching this movie. The creatures in this film were more frightening, plus we got to see them more. I was on the edge of my seat, and filed with tension regarding the characters and them just trying to survive. For the movie to have little sound/talking it’s very effective for the movie and scary as well. This movie gave me goosebumps and there were more scares. The cinematography, the camera work, and the visual effects were fantastic. You definitely have to watch this in theaters to get that true movie experience. John Krasinski is doing an amazing job with these movies. A Quiet Place: Part II is nerve wracking, intense, terrifying, suspenseful, and a must watch. I loved the first movie, but Part II is my favorite of the two films.

I’m Just F*cking With You (2019) – Rating: 4/5

This movie/episode of Into The Dark is centered around April Fool’s Day. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I kind of expected some jokes since the title of the movie implies it. The cast were good in their roles. Hayes MacArthur who plays Chester in the movie is a jokester who constantly plays pranks on Larry (Keir O’Donnell) and you don’t know whether to take them serious or not, which is what makes them funny lol. The tone and pacing of the movie was great. I also thought the music, cinematography aesthetic, and neon lighting went great with the movie. I’m Just F*cking With You is entertaining, pretty insane, refreshing for horror fans, and has some twists. This installment of Into The Dark is one of my favorites.

Cruella (2021) -Rating: 4.5/5

While I haven’t seen all of Disney’s live action films, this movie is in my top three out of the Disney live action films that I did see. First let’s talk about the cast. They did a great job, but of course the two Emmas, Emma Stone and Emma Thompson stole the show with their amazing performances. I thought these two ladies played their characters well having that great chemistry, and their ulterior motives for each other.  I’m not too familiar with Cruella as a villain or her origin, but I was thoroughly entertained with this movie. I love the boldness and edginess of the movie, and how it’s very fitting for the 70s punk rock scene. The fashion and the costumes were fabulous. The cinematography was beautiful, the movie is visually stunning, and the music was great. I loved the plot twist, which I didn’t see coming. Every villain has an origin, and this story kept me glued to the screen. And there’s a mid credits scene, which I didn’t expect. Cruella is fun, fresh, vibrant, stylish, and one of the best Disney live action films I’ve seen.
