Doctor Sleep (Movie Review)

DS 3

Release Date: November 08, 2019

Genre: Horror

Cast: Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, Kyliegh Curran, Carl Lumbly, Zahn McClarnon, Emily Alyn Lind

Summary (from Rotten Tomatoes):

“Doctor Sleep” is the continuation of Danny Torrance’s story 40 years after the terrifying events of Stephen King’s The Shining. Still irrevocably scarred by the trauma he endured as a child at the Overlook, Dan Torrance has fought to find some semblance of peace. But that peace is shattered when he encounters Abra, a courageous teenager with her own powerful extrasensory gift, known as the “shine.” Instinctively recognizing that Dan shares her power, Abra has sought him out, desperate for his help against the merciless Rose the Hat and her followers, The True Knot, who feed off the shine of innocents in their quest for immortality. Forming an unlikely alliance, Dan and Abra engage in a brutal life-or-death battle with Rose. Abra’s innocence and fearless embrace of her shine compel Dan to call upon his own powers as never before-at once facing his fears and reawakening the ghosts of the past.

Review By Me

Last month, I watched The Shining for the first time. I know, with me being a horror fan, I should’ve been seen this horror classic, but you know what they say, better late than never. Now set decades after the events in The Shining, we see a grown-up Danny Torrance played by Ewan McGregor, who struggles with childhood trauma and alcoholism. I was excited to see Doctor Sleep, because when I saw the movie trailer, I got goosebumps, and my goosebumps mean that a movie is gonna be good. The cast in this movie did an amazing job, the acting was great, and the new characters were interesting. I want to highlight the performances of Ewan McGregor, Rebecca Ferguson, and Kyliegh Curran. Ewan McGregor gave a fine performance as an older Danny; I love the relationship he had with Aba Stone, a kid who also has “the shine”, a role played by newcomer, Kyliegh Curran, who gave a powerhouse performance as the fearless, powerful, little girl who embraced her “shine”, I loved it. Rebecca Ferguson gave a terrifying performance as Rose the Hat, a cult leader who feeds on children with psychic powers. Speaking of cult leader, the cult goes by the name of “The True Knot”. I’m not gonna say much, except that these people are bad, terrifying, and hunts kids with “the shine”. In Doctor Sleep we get to see flashbacks from The Shining, which you kind of figured you would see. Being a sequel to the horror classic, The Shining, the movie stands on its own, and it shines lol.  I really enjoyed this movie, it’s definitely one of my favorite movies of the year ! The movie score was haunting, and the visuals were stunning, I was not disappointed. Doctor Sleep is one of Stephen King’s best film adaptations as well as one of my favorites. Is it safe to say that I like Doctor Sleep a bit more than The Shining ?  If you’re a fan of Stephen King, then you should watch this movie, or if you are into Horror Or Suspense, then this movie should be on your must see list. Will you guys be seeing Doctor Sleep ? If so, let me know in the comments below. As always thanks for reading !

Joker (Movie Review)

JOKER #14

Release Date: October 04, 2019

Genre: Action & Adventure, Drama, Mystery & Suspense

Cast: Joaquin Phoenix, Robert DeNiro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy, Shea Whigham

Summary (from Rotten Tomatoes):

“Joker” centers around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone fictional story not seen before on the big screen. Phillips’ exploration of Arthur Fleck, who is indelibly portrayed by Joaquin Phoenix, is of a man struggling to find his way in Gotham’s fractured society. A clown-for-hire by day, he aspires to be a stand-up comic at night…but finds the joke always seems to be on him. Caught in a cyclical existence between apathy and cruelty, Arthur makes one bad decision that brings about a chain reaction of escalating events in this gritty character study.

Review By Me

The Joker is one of the greatest comic book villains ever, and one of my favorites. I fell in love with The Joker when Heath Ledger portrayed him in 2008’s The Dark Knight. He gave an amazing performance as the character, which earned him praise for fully immersing himself into this role; This also earned him a well-deserved Oscar. A little over a decade later, a film on the origins of the iconic villain is now out, starring the talented Joaquin Phoenix. When I heard a Joker film was being released I was excited because The Joker is a great villain. The fact that Joaquin Phoenix is starring in this role is perfect, because he is a great actor. The entire cast of the movie was great: Zazie Beetz, Robert DeNiro, and Frances Conroy, but the star of the film is no doubt Joaquin Phoenix. I loved him when he starred as Johnny Cash in Walk The Line, and I love him even more in this role. The role of The Joker has great character development, and Joaquin brought that darkness and tragedy to the role. My favorite part of the movie is maybe about the last 45 minutes to a hour of the film, when Arthur Fleck, embraces his Joker alter ego; That last hour of the movie gave me chills, I loved it ! Another thing about this movie is the suspense; It’s like you don’t know what will happen next, but I think that’s a great thing. The director of the movie, Todd Phillips did an extraordinary job with Joker, he captured the story of the character so well with the darkness and grittiness. The cinematography and score were brilliant, I wouldn’t be surprised if the movie received Oscar nominations for its cinematography, score, and more. Joker is an amazing, dark, gritty, and intense masterpiece taking us into the origin of Gotham’s and comic book’s iconic and greatest villain. Joaquin Phoenix gives a tour de force performance, which deserves an Oscar nomination and a win for sure ! This movie is one of the best comic book movies I’ve seen and is one of my favorite movies of the year ! Joker is a cinematic piece of art and a movie that I would go see again. This is a must see film ! Have you guys seen Joker ? Or do you plan on seeing it ? Let me know in the comment below. As always thanks for reading !

Review By Me

Almost a month and a half later, I finally saw Godzilla: King of The Monsters. I never seen any of the Godzilla movies, but when I saw the trailer for this film, I knew I wanted to go see it. At the end of Kong: Skull Island, we are shown archived cave paintings depicting that other Titans exist besides Kong, which kind of hinted that another film about these Titans would be released. Godzilla jumps right in, right from the start; The film isn’t slow paced but moves at a great pace. The cast of this movie is star studded, and with star studded cast comes great relationships, which you can see and feel in the movie. I’m sure there’s a few actors the audience recognized. While at first most of the characters were against Godzilla, at the end they realized he was sort of like their protector and the only chance they have against the other Titans. I though the cast did an amazing job. The action in this movie was great. There was nonstop action throughout the film, which I loved. I was on the edge of my seat, excited for the next scenes to come, which were not disappointing. And wow, the visual effects were stunning. The effects looked real and great. The Titans were big and intimidating, and visually I was in awe. This movie was a visual spectacle. I’m so glad I was finally able to see this movie, because it is amazing…I think it’s interesting and great how films and franchises are taking the MCU approach, creating a shared universe. It’s cool to show the connection between the films in ways the audience wouldn’t even think of. It was also nice to get a slight background on the Titans. Speaking of shared universes, I heard that Godzilla vs. Kong is set to come out next year (Pretty exciting right ?). Godzilla: King of The Monsters is a fantastic and fun movie with an all-star cast, stunning visuals, and great action throughout the film. I recommend everyone to see this movie, while it’s still in theaters. If you’ve seen it, let me know what you think below. Thanks for reading !

Review By Me

MCU’s 23rd film, Spiderman: Far From Home is out, and just like its predecessors is raking in big at the box office, which is no surprise lol.. I’m always happy and excited when any MCU movie is getting released. As I’ve stated before the MCU is this amazing shared universe focusing on these series of superhero films, and not only are they great as solo films, but when you have the characters together in a film, and the films are connected in ways you can’t imagine, its amazing. I love being invested in these movies, it’s not a bad thing, I’m just passionate about these movies. Spiderman: Far From Home takes place after Avengers: Endgame, and I hope everyone has seen Endgame, because in this film, Peter is dealing with the death of Tony Stark (yes death) , and of course he misses him a lot. I loveee Tom Holland as Peter Parker; I think he does an awesome job at portraying this character, with his charm and youth. Some of our favorite characters return: MJ, Ned, Happy, and Aunt May. There’s also new faces (wink wink) lol. Spiderman: Homecoming is a good movie and was a great way to introduce Spiderman into the MCU. But Far From Home is pmy favorite of the two and is a great sequel.  I really enjoyed seeing Peter being with his friends on this fun, romantic adventure in Europe. As usual Peter tries to keep the balance of being Peter Parker and Spiderman a secret, which sometimes isn’t easy lol. The visual effects in this movie are amazing, you feel like the visuals are right there. I loved Far From Home, it made me laugh, and is a fun, action packed, and surprising ride. The cast is amazing and gave great performances, plus I love Zendaya as MJ, being her morbid self lol. And woah as usual stay after the film for the mid-credit and post credit scene, you don’t want to miss it. Spiderman: Far From Home is a satisfying conclusion to the Infinity Saga, and I loved it. Wow, It’s been a fun, emotional, and exciting ride on this 23 film journey, here’s to Phase 4 and the films to come. Hey, If you’ve seen Far From Home, let me know what you think below ! If you havent seen it, I recommend you to. Thanks for reading !

Avengers: Endgame Buzz !

Avengers Endgame 2

In what is the MOST anticipated movie of the year, Avengers: Endgame will be hitting theaters Thursday, and worldwide on Friday. I am obsessed and in love with this franchise. The Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) is this amazing shared universe focusing on these series of superhero films; The films are great in their own right  and the fact that they are connected, which is done so brilliantly, makes me more excited to see them. 2008’s Iron Man kicked off Phase One of this amazing universe and eleven years later, just 3 months after Avengers: Endgame, Spiderman: Far From Home will be released in July, which will wrap up Phase Three. Endgame is the film that all Marvel fans have been waiting for since last year’s blockbuster hit Avengers: Infinity War. Ever since after seeing Infinity War ( which I’ve seen more than 15 times btw– yes this movie is amazing), I’ve been counting down and anxiously waiting for movie trailers and movie posters for Endgame, that’s how real it is. Thanos achieved his goal and “snapped” some of our favorite heroes away along with half of the universe, let’s just say that this was unexpected and pretty darn crazy for Marvel fans , I did not think that would’ve happened. The ending is pretty unbelievable, especially  to see our heroes crumbling into dust (wow). Ten years in the making we have Endgame, the perfect ending to round out the first ten years. From seeing the trailers and Infinity War, I know that this movie will be exciting, action-packed, emotional — so many words to describe the anticipation around this movie. I read reviews (of course they were non spoiler) where Avengers: Endgame was described as Fantastic, Epic, a Satisfying Conclusion, Monumental — which I believe are all true. For Marvel Fans, Endgame would be the crème de la crème, the cherry on top of this long awaited ice cream sundae. Its amazing, and exciting to be invested into these films; I cannot wait to see Endgame on Saturday and you can bet that I will see this movie more than a few times; And to the Marvel fans we’ve earned this moment; this movie was made for us, so let’s celebrate this movie experience together; There will be laughter, crying, and cheering when we see Endgame, which is why this will be monumental and this movie no doubt will be another blockbuster hit; And to the Russo brothers, the incredible cast (who I loveee) and crew, the fans and I thank you for making this epic conclusion; and to Stan Lee thank you for giving us great comic book characters to be adapted into these amazing films, may you Rest In Peace ! Thanks for reading !
